IBM has announced a massive new product introduction based on what it calls a new category of expert integrated systems -- IBM PureSystems. These new systems are more than just a server and an operating system, they are a package designed to integrate the server, storage, and networking all in one highly automated machine. Plus -- and there are a lot of plusses with this announcement -- PureSystems include a whole new metaphor for embedding technology and applying it called Patterns of Expertise. The theme is automation.

Halcyon Software has released Systems Operations Suite v4.0 of its monitoring and automation solution for the IBM i platform. Operations Suite v4.0 lets you continuously monitor critical processes and core applications running on IBM i so that operations run without disruption and business continuity is maintained. The technology also allows System Administrators to automate all routine tasks, essential system saves, and manual check lists, as well as configure appropriate responses to common issues to eliminate human error and reduce IT costs, Halcyon says.

Each year, PowerTech performs hundreds of compliance assessment audits on IBM i servers of varying sizes and across multiple industries, including financial, retail, and manufacturing. This ninth annual study summarizes data from security audits performed January to December 2011.

While sitting at a basketball game the other night (what can I say, Warriors vs. Timberwolves, not the most exciting of games) my mind wandered into the land of IBM Systems Director. I had had a planning call earlier in the day with a customer getting ready to implement Systems Director and it dawned on me that one of the most important items to consider for the environment that Systems Director will manage is the necessary network ports that need to be open between the management server and the end points it is going to manage . . . and, unfortunately, that same topic can be one of the most daunting.

Virtual SCSI (VSCSI) disks are great for sharing physical disks without requiring physical adapters, but mapping the configuration can be painful. I recently came across a couple of tools for tracing and mapping out the VSCSI configuration that have been huge time savers.

IBM’s fourth tech refresh for IBM i 7.1 will be ready next week on May 18. The biggest highlight is bringing Live Partition Mobility (LPM) to IBM i, which basically lets you move actively running workloads around -- live, of course. We covered LPM for AIX in our debut digital issue of POWER IT Pro, and we’re pleased to see it now for IBM i. When it comes to using IBM i for the cloud, both private or in public situations, LPM can become quite handy.
